Zong advancing to a successful Bio Metric re-verification process

Islamabad----Utilizing their resources at the optimum level, telecommunication companies have successfully verified over 22 million SIMs in just over three weeks. However, the experts believe the challenging task of re-verification of remaining 83 million SIMs is going to be very difficult to achieve within the given timeline.

The verification of over 22 million SIMs shows that the re-verification process is going in full swing.Keeping in view the whole hearted efforts, logistical and awareness challenges faced by the cellular companies and importance of completing the activity in the context of national security it is essential the customers come out to fulfill their duty and ensure that they verify SIMs that are in their use.

Eman Khan, a Zong customer while showing her satisfaction over the Zong SIM verification process said, “I came to know about the SIM verification process through an SMS by Zong to get my SIM verified before the due date. Chairman PTA is untraceable?

Chairman PTA receives unwanted SMS himself
Chairman PTA – Farooq Ahmad Awan
Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Farooq Awan is ‘not in contact’ for last 12 days disclosed Secretary Information Technology  Aamir Tariq Zaman Khan while responding to National Assembly Standing Committee on IT last Monday.
It was noted in the committee meeting that Farooq Awan took number of decisions on his own without taking care of rules and regulation as defined in Telecom Act 1996. He is already facing number of allegations in National Assembly, Supreme Court and Lahore High Court.
In December 2012 Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication had termed the appointment of Farooq Awan as illegal and a sheer violation of rules. During the meeting the subcommittee had pin-pointed the fact that instead of choosing a senior member from the authority for the seat of chairman, government had selected Farooq Awan whose name is already involved in various scandals.
His appointment case is also being heard in Lahore High Court which has already barred him from  discharging tasks without the consent of authority (remaining members of PTA). “Technically, he has become a dysfunctional chairman”, an official of the PTA told on the condition of anonymity.
“Since his appointment in August 2012, Farooq Awan has not taken interest in the affairs of authority. All the departments at PTA directly report to him which according to Act should be answerable to authority other than routine administrative tasks “.
Sources at PTA have confirmed that during past 5 months Farooq Awan has brought in his close companions on number of top posts including DG Finance, DG Coordination, DG Audit. Similarly, all the departments including Enforcement, Law, Vigilance, Recovery, HR, Admin, Audit report him directly.
National Assembly Standing Committee on IT has already shown displeasure over the personal handling of financial matters by Chairman himself. Recently, Awan processed a cheque of Rs. 10 million in favor of 3G consultants through DG finance Iftikhar Ahmed.
In August-September,  he transferred the insurance amount of PTA employees to a ‘certain’ bank account through DG Finance bypassing the approval of authority.
Telecom related affairs are on stand still position and PTA seems to have become incapable of dealing with very basic matters. Every year in September, PTA publish annual telecom report for the assistance of existing and future investors, media and various government departments. For the year 2012, the report hasn’t been published even after 5 months have gone. Monthly industry statistics are not being updated on its website. Similarly, public relations department has forgotten to interact with media.
During his tenure, he only made announcements about three things, 3G auction in Pakistan, negotiation with Google for opening an office in the country, removal of unwanted and controversial content from YouTube. All three hit the doldrums and do not appear to be happening in near future.
We tried to take his version on the above matters but all our efforts proved futile in establishing a contact with him.

Digital Publishers Association of Pakistan formed, Is the future of Pakistani blogger bleak?

This hasn’t happened over night, it is a well thought plan to monopolize the digital arena of Pakistan by creating a digital cartel in the form of Digital Publishers Association of Pakistan (DPAP). Although, this digital association doesn’t have its presence online but mere its creation has worried over 98% of bloggers in Pakistan who are still struggling to be recognized by the advertisers.

The founding members of this association are Dawn, Jang Media Group, Express Media Group, Business Recorder, ROZEE.PK and SAMAA TV.

Pakistan is a market of nearly 30 million internet users and with 3G to be launched in near future for 120 million mobile phone users and soon as this technology gets introduced here, this internet user base will multiply dramatically in no time.

There is a big role of young people in increasing this internet/broadband usage in Pakistan in the last 10 years. Many of them came forward and started their own blogs while spreading more awareness among Pakistanis through their words and images. These free minded people started highlighting the errors of conventional media and even talked about those things which our print and electronic media have never dared to discuss in past.

Not only it created a bigger challenge for media tycoons in terms of quality of content but also paved way for more advertising avenues.

Not many but few of the successful bloggers have been able to impress the national advertisers and they are regularly publishing ads. I personally know many journalists of print and electronic media who have started their own blogs because of inadequate pays and highly politicized environment and the number is growing.

Apart from usual advertising on print and TV, this blogging community has established an entire new domain of digital advertising, also, it has lowered the future prospects of print advertising. One can easily witness the ad-less pages of reputed newspapers. Even though, they are running their own news websites and FM Radio Stations but still this mushroom like growth of blogs is pain in their neck.

The inception of DPAP is a warning to all those carefree bloggers who have been a hard nut to crack in the past. This is a message that the cartel will get bigger and stronger.

According to an official of a media house, the association is a reflection of newspaper and electronic media societies that exists to safeguard the vested interests of big guns. Soon they may start lobbying to pressurize the government for implementing strict laws governing the internet community.

I don’t think that the already frightened government will take much time to draft and implement any such thing for controlling this wild horse.

For sure, this will have its merits and de-merits but we will need to see how blogger community in Pakistan react to this before it is too late.

Wi-tribe faces trouble in recovering monthly bills

Wi-tribe – the second largest WiMax operator in Pakistan is facing severe issues in recovering monthly bills. According to reports, recovery department at Wi-tribe is finding it very hard to convince customers for a recharge and to achieve their monthly recovery target it is consistently launching lucky draw offers for its customers to win a prize by staying current.
The latest offer says, whoever pays the October bill will be able to enter into lucky draw for winning a Samsung Galaxy SIII. Wi-tribe will distribute 20 Samsung Galaxy SIIIs among its customers who have cleared their monthly bills.
Wi-tribe faces trouble in recovering monthly bills
Almost, every month, Wi-tribe engages its customers into lucky draws for recovering their bills. In July it offered Summer Hangama and later in August it announced to distribute LCDs and iPads among those lucky winners who have paid their bills.
Offering various schemes and lucky draws for retaining customers and making better the cash flows seems to have become a regular practice in Pakistan.  The only focus of telecom companies appears to be selling as much connection as they can without paying much attention to service quality and customer care which is resulting in high churn ratio.
A latest study reveals that an average broadband customer switches company every 3 months after getting fed up with bad customer care and poor quality of services. In order to bring back the annoyed customer, these company start running attractive promotions for making customer’s mind to recharge the account for at least once. Not only this increases the much needed cash flow but also help maintains the capital value of the company by increasing the active customer ratio.

Update: Wi-tribe’s view point

We have received the view point from Wi-tribe on the above story which is as follow;
wi-tribe faces no shortfall in target revenues from collections. In fact it continuously celebrates the mutually fulfilling relationship it enjoys with its users, wi-tribers, whose needs are the focal point of all of wi-tribe’s endeavors.
This is precisely why wi-tribe is one of the few companies that regularly makes lucrative offerings to its loyal customers such as lucky draws for iPads, 3D TVs and the most recent, Samsung Galaxy S3 phones.
The objective of these promotions is solely to reward the customer for their loyalty and long standing relationship with wi-tribe along with helping them enjoy technologically enriching their broadband experience and lives.

Chairman PTA receives unwanted SMS himself

Chairman PTA receives unwanted SMS himself
Chairman PTA – Farooq Ahmad Awan
Yes, this was the statement of Chairman PTA-Farooq Ahmad Awan – in front of National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology that he himself received illegal and unwanted SMSes.
Matter regarding the unwanted SMSes that almost every Pakistani receives daily on his/her mobilephone was discussed today in the committee’s session which was chaired by Mohammad Barjis Tahir. Farooq Awan told the committee that strict action would taken against those sending illegal SMSes under Pakistan Electronic Cyber Crime Bill in order to control this menace.
Anusha Rehman – a sitting MNA -  blamed PTA for not controlling this menace particularly when PTA has the mechanism to control it.
Another major decision was taken with reference to 3G licensing in Pakistan. Committee directed the Authority to make sure that no defaulter cellular company participate in the 3G licensing. It was directed after CEO of Universal Services Fund briefed that the organization has Rs. 42 billion whereas it owes Rs. 26 billion against different cellular companies. The committee demanded the list of defaulters from the authority.
